Anterior compartment of lower leg consists of 4 muscles
Tibialis Anterior
Origin: Lateral condyle and proximal lateral shaft of tibia
Insertion: Base of metatarsal 1 and medial cuneiform
Action: Dorsi flexion and inversion of the foot
Innervation: Deep peroneal (fibular) nerve (L4-S1)
Extensor Hallucis longus
Origin: Anterior surface of fibula and the adjacent anterior interosseous membrane
Insertion: Dorsal surface of the distal phalanx of digit 1 (big toe)
Action: Extension of big toe, dorsi flexion and inversion of the foot
Innervation: Deep fibular nerve (L4-S1)
Extensor Digitorum Longus
Origin: Lateral condyle of the tibia, upper ¾ of the anterior fibular shaft and interosseous membrane
Insertion: distal phalanges of digit 2-5
Action: Extension of digit 2-5, dorsi flexion and eversion of the foot
Innervation: Deep fibular nerve L4-S1
Peroneus tertius
Origin: Anterior surface of the fibula, the tibiofibular ligament, and the intermuscular septum
Insertion: Dorsal surface of the base of metatarsal
Action: Eversion and dorsi flexion of the ankle
Innervation: deep fibular nerve L3, L4 and S1
